Bigfoot? UFOs? Bunch of bunk

A large, mysterious primate roams the forests of the Bulkley Valley, leaving only the occasional footprint. Meanwhile, alien ships probe our skies, disappearing with hardly a trace,

At least this is what a growing number of Bulkley Valley people believe. But according to a few top scientists in British Columbia, the probability any of these claims are true is virtually nil.

Last fall, continuing throughout this winter, there were repeated reports of Bigfoot and UFO sightings from Moricetown to Burns Lake.

In fact, Mormon missionaries documented large footprints and no less than a dozen reliable people contacted this newspaper from an area near Moricetown and Houston with photos and accounts of an unexplainable figure seemingly making tracks near their homes.

And then there were those of incredible veracity, some in positions of great responsibility, living in Smithers, who reported seeing those infamous lights in the Bulkley Valley sky.

However, Douglas Scott is a professor of astrophysics at the University of British Columbia who is fairly confident alien species exist somewhere in the universe. But given its immense size, he says it is extremely unlikely they’ve been popping in to visit us.

“The basic thing is it’s fantastically difficult to visit other stars. Somewhere out there there are probably other living beings of some sort. But the distances are huge,” Scott says.

Even traveling at the speed of light, which is impossible according to the laws of physics, it would take four years to reach the nearest star, Proxima Centauri. That means even if humans managed to build a spacecraft that could travel as fast as 30,000 km in one second, our astronauts would be in for a 40 year trip.

Even getting to Mars is very difficult, Scott adds. “Going to a star is something like 100,000 times harder. It’s not just a bit harder.”

Aliens would have similar difficulties. But again, he stresses that he doesn’t discount the possibility of extraterrestrial life altogether.

“I just refuse to believe that aliens zip around the Earth, like they were coming here on a whim. If somebody has some real evidence I would be the first to be really excited and want to know more. But the stuff you hear about, there’s never any hard evidence.”

As for the possibility of a large primate stomping around in the forests of British Columbia, Dr. Jacob Goheen, an assistant professor of zoology at UBC who studies the natural history of mammals, scoffs at the very idea.

“I hardly know where to begin,” he says. “First of all, there aren’t any other apes in the western hemisphere. And one kind of pattern we see among mammals is that in like species, their geographical ranges overlap. The second thing is that it’s hard to imagine a species of that size going undetected for that long.”

Goheen says the act of searching for hypothetical animals cannot be considered science. People involved in scientific research unanimously reject the existence of crypto-animals like Bigfoot, he says, and people who claim they do exist don’t have bona fide scientific credentials.

“You will not find a biologist who believes in these things and biologists are the experts. So that should tell you something. I hate to sound kind of snooty there, but it would be like asking a professional actor about how we should construct a bridge rather than a civil engineer.”

In any case, a large primate would have a very hard time surviving in the forests of Northwestern B.C., Goheen adds, knowing what we do about the diet of other species of apes. “Chimpanzees and ourangutans eat fruits mainly. Gorillas eat leaves but they spend all day eating.”

“There are very few mammals that can make a living eating conifer leaves. It’s really bad stuff — they’re toxic. There are no primates I’ve ever heard of eating those.”

In any case, Goheen says, crypto-zoologists are so off their rockers that they are hardly worth responding to. They don’t have anything valuable to add to the current body of knowledge, he says.

“A debate is only a good debate if both sides have something to contribute. For example, we don’t debate that storks carry babies to our doorsteps. Even though you could argue that, you would just be insane.”

But is it true that people who believe they have sighted Bigfoot don’t have all their marbles?

Not necessarily, according to Dr. Paul D. Siakaluk, associate professor of psychology at the University of Northern British Columbia. Siakaluk says some people have such strongly held beliefs that they will flat-out refuse to accept evidence that challenges them, no matter how convincing.

“People are more interested in and will only accept information that’s consistent with their belief structure already. So, if they don’t believe or understand that time travel is impossible…. then they will disregard any information or knowledge that’s presented to them. They will only accept information that would be consistent with what they believe.”

Many people have pre-conceived notions of what alien craft should look like. For example, flying saucers, a staple of science-fiction, are commonly reported by UFO sighters, he says. “The idea that there would be some disc-shaped light object is what we refer to as a schema”, Siakaluk says. A `schema’ is a term used in psychology that means a set of beliefs or expectations about something in the world.

Siakaluk also says some people are more prone to believing in pseudoscience than others. “People do differ in — perhaps a bad term — in terms of gullibility.”

The bottom line, say Scott and Goheen, is that anyone making a paranormal claim should get ready to prove it.

Scott recalls a saying popular among skeptics: “The most extraordinary claims require the most extraordinary evidence. The crazier the thing you’re claiming is the better your evidence should be,” he says.

“If you really did see a UFO, try to get some really good evidence.”

And taking better photographs and videos would be a good start, says Goheen.

“Invariably when people see Bigfoot they never have a camera. Except this really grainy photo of some dude dressed in a gorilla costume.”

A New Way to Look at Bigfoot

Author: MandM Admin  |  Category: Monsters  |  Comments (0)  |  Add Comment

One of the things that surprised me the most when I started investigating UFO sightings and other related phenomena was the realization that there are different species of extraterrestrials being reported. This would make sense, though, if you consider the vastness of the universe, and incorporate the multi-verse theory championed by Dr. Michio Kaku, a theoretical physicist with City College of New York. What does all of this mean, though?

In a February 5, 2009 CNN article entitled “Galaxy may be full of ´Earths´, alien life”, researchers at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland estimate through computer models that there could be between 361 and 38,000 civilizations in our Milky Way galaxy alone. Factor in a whole universe full of civilizations, as well as the possible existence of more than one universe, the total could be off the charts. Current thinking by Ufologists (scientists who investigate the UFO and Extraterrestrial Hypothesis) is that one, if not several, of these civilizations are monitoring the inhabitants of our planet, and doing so in a covert way to avoid wide-scale confrontation. Of course, such efforts should be effortless for a civilization with the technology to travel between planets.

So, let´s assume that more than one civilization is traveling on a constant basis through our planetary neighborhood. It would be ridiculous to believe that all species of alien would appear the same, and would look similar to us. Of the millions of species native to this planet alone, there is great variety.

The best intelligence available on multiple civilizations visiting Earth is derived from those victimized people called “Contactees” and “Abductees” or “Abduction Experiencers”, since they have had direct contact. Descriptions of three and a half foot tall grey aliens barely scratch the surface. Other descriptions include a reptilian-like species, a “Nordic”-like humanoid species with a height of between 7 and 8 feet with blond hair and blue almond shaped or slanted eyes, and several robot-like classes that may resemble a humanoid or box-shape with antennae, which many in Brazil have termed “Chupas” or “chupa-chupa”, meaning “the sucker” for its reputation for taking blood specimens from its victims.

The species that attracted the most attention from me is the large, hairy anthropoid, commonly referred to as “Bigfoot” or “Sasquatch” and believed to be a previously uncatalogued animal species. There have been thousands of sightings of this species throughout the centuries and from hundreds of countries. Most sightings of this anthropoid involve accidental sightings from a distance as they walk through a densely wooded and generally uninhabited area. Cryptozoologists (scientists who study previously unknown and uncatalogued species of animal) are constantly criticized due to the lack of a Bigfoot body or bones being found. Sometimes it seems the only place Bigfoot does exist is on film!

Some recent sightings have included an anthropoid exiting a spacecraft or stepping through a ring or portal hovering just above the ground. Native American mythology speaks of the ability by the Sasquatch to disappear right in front of your eyes. Native Americans around the state of Utah refer to the Sasquatch as a “Skinwalker”, a demon spirit which has taken human-like form. This has been documented in the book Hunt for the Skinwalker by Dr. Colm Kelleher, PhD, formerly Deputy Administrator of the National Institute of Discovery Science, and investigative reporter George Knapp of KLAS-TV, both based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Factoring in the theory of multi-verses, both of these methods, spacecraft and portal-travel, could be transportation from Point A to Point B in the same universe, from Point A to Point A in different universes, or Point A to Point B in different universes. On top of the possibility that Bigfoot could still be a resident of planet Earth, this means that it could be from another planet, or another universe altogether.

This flies in the face of the belief that Bigfoot is an animal, suggesting instead that it is an intelligent, extraterrestrial entity.

A measure of intelligence and a manner of entry and exit from a sighting area goes far in explaining why Bigfoot has only been accidentally seen and sometimes opportunistically photographed.

This supposition would confound pseudo-skeptics who continue to insist and sometimes to bank their credibility upon the premise that Bigfoot does not exist. It would also go a long way to explain why the smartest species on this planet (presumably Humans) has been unable to substantiate adequately for scientific research the existence of the elusive Bigfoot!

Science believes that a lot could be learned upon the discovery and documentation of a previously unknown species. In this case, though, Cryptozoologists and Ufologists believe a wealth of information could be obtained beyond what science currently expects.

Could ’sprites’ explain some UFO sightings ?

Author: MandM Admin  |  Category: Myths  |  Comment (1)  |  Add Comment

In legend, sprites are trolls, elves and other spirits that dance high above our ozone layer. But scientists at Tel Aviv University have discovered that some very real “sprites” are zipping across the atmosphere as well, providing a possible explanation for those other legendary denizens of the skies, UFOs.

Thunderstorms, says Prof. Colin Price, head of the Geophysics and Planetary Sciences Department at Tel Aviv University, are the catalyst for a newly discovered natural phenomenon he calls “sprites.” He and his colleagues are one of the leading teams in the world studying the phenomenon, and Prof. Price leads the study of “winter sprites” ? those that appear only in the northern hemisphere’s winter months.

“Sprites appear above most thunderstorms,” explains Prof. Price, “but we didn’t see them until recently. They are high in the sky and last for only a fraction of a second.” While there is much debate over the cause or function of these mysterious flashes in the sky, they may, Prof. Price says, explain some bizarre reports of UFO sightings.

An Electrifying Discovery

Sprites are described as flashes high in the atmosphere, between 35 and 80 miles from the ground, much higher than the 7 to 10 miles where regular lightning bolts usually occur.

“Lightning from the thunderstorm excites the electric field above, producing a flash of light called a sprite,” explains Prof. Price. “We now understand that only a specific type of lightning is the trigger that initiates sprites aloft.”

Though sprites have existed for millions of years, they were first discovered and documented only by accident in 1989 when a researcher studying stars was calibrating a camera pointed at the distant atmosphere where sprites occur.

“Sprites, which only occur in conjunction with thunderstorms, never occur on their own, and are cousins to similar natural phenomenon dubbed by atmospheric electricians as ‘elves,’ ‘goblins’ and ‘trolls,’” Prof. Price says. These flashes are so named because they appear to “dance” in the sky, which may explain some UFO sightings.

Candles on a Celestial Birthday Cake

Tel Aviv University’s research team is one of the leading global groups studying the phenomenon. But Prof. Price and his students are now working in collaboration with other Israeli scientists from The Open University and The Hebrew University to take three-dimensional pictures of sprites to gain a better understanding of their structure. Using remote-controlled roof-mounted cameras, the researchers are able to look at the thunderstorms that produce sprites when they are still over the Mediterranean Sea.

From their unique vantage point in Israel, the researchers are leading the world in the study of winter sprites. Prof. Price’s new camera techniques, in particular, have revealed the sprites’ circular structures, which are much like those of candles on a birthday cake. Using triangulation, Prof. Price and his team have also been able to calculate the dimensions of the sprites’ features. “The candles in the sprites are up to 15 miles high, with the cluster of candles 45 miles wide –– it looks like a huge birthday celebration!”

Because of their high altitude, sprites may also have an impact on the chemistry of the Earth’s ozone layer. “Since they are relatively infrequent, the global impact is likely small,” says Prof. Price. “But we’re researching that now.”

Fighter jets scrambled after UFO

Author: MandM Admin  |  Category: Myths  |  Comments (0)  |  Add Comment

The object was spotted by the pilot of Olympic Airways flight 266 from Athens, and the sighting was corroborated by staff at Athens Airport and a nearby Greek air force base. Pilots of two other passenger jets also reported seeing the body.

The eyewitnesses described it as looking like a large star, although it was moving erratically and constantly changing shape.

Two fighter jets were sent to investigate the sighting over the Greek capital in November 2007 but the object shot up into the sky and vanished before they could get a clear view.

The incident was kept secret by the Greek authorities for more than a year, but is now generating huge interest after official documents and recordings of the conversation between the pilot and control tower were released.

An Olympic Airlines spokeswoman said: “I can confirm the incident. It is the first of its kind involving our pilots.”

Greek officials say that the object, which was not detected on any radar, was probably a mistaken sighting of the planet Venus in the Autumn night sky.

This is not the first time that a passenger jet has had a close encounter with a UFO. Documents released by the Ministry of Defence last year disclosed that an Alitalia flight had a near miss while landing at Heathrow in 1991, with the pilot describing an object “similar to a missile – light brown or fawn – about three metres in length but without any exhaust flame”.

British UFO sightings double in a single year

Author: MandM Admin  |  Category: Myths  |  Comments (0)  |  Add Comment

Officials have admitted the number of UFO sightings more than doubled last year - including one spotted hovering over Parliament.

A total of 285 unidentified flying objects were reported in 2008, compared to just 135 in 2007, according to a Ministry of Defence document.

The mystery craft spotted hovering opposite Parliament was reported on February 12.

According to the document: ‘There was a craft that had green, red and white lights. It was still and static in the sky. It was seen for about half an hour.’

The rise in the number of sightings - the biggest since 1998 - was described as ‘phenomenal’ by experts.

The MoD only investigates reports of unidentified flying objects that it considers may pose a risk to national security, and most of the incidents seem just to have been logged and ignored.

Many of the sightings appear to be the products of somewhat fevered imaginations. For instance, on May 6 someone reported a ‘fast moving green object’ on the M6 motorway.

On June 28, near Cobham in Somerset, the document notes that someone reported seeing ’something interesting’ in the sky.

A few days earlier, it states: ‘Twenty-five amber lights were seen leaving the Heathrow area. They were seen travelling West at 45 degrees, 200-300 knots’.

In July, on the A6 road near Buxton in Derbyshire: ‘There was a distant bright light, like a star’.

On October 30, above Wakefield, West Yorkshire, the document records: ‘There was an orange object in the sky. It was the size of an aircraft.’

And a UFO the size of a 747 was reported above Leeds, West Yorkshire, in February.

That craft was described as a ‘jumbo jet sized object which was flat and round with a blue ripple underside. It made no sound and then disappeared.’

The dossier was published just one week after it emerged the RAF has tried to shoot down UFOs under instructions from the MoD.

Pilots have took aim at UFOs several times but failed to bring them down, former MoD employee and UFO expert Nick Pope claimed.

Mr Pope, who worked on the MoD’s UFO section for three years, said the ’shoot down’ directive had been in place since the 1980s.

‘We know of cases where the order has been given to shoot down - with little effect to the UFO,’ Mr Pope said.

Firing at UFOs was ‘not automatic but happens when something in our airspace is deemed to be a threat’ he said.

‘In the case of UFOs, whether the object is causing a threat is very much a (pilot’s) judgment call.’

And last month it was claimed that a UFO ripped a 60ft blade off a wind farm turbine.

Hundred of witnesses reported hearing an earsplitting bang at 4am.

One saw orangey-yellow spheres skimming across the sky, while another reported a ‘massive ball of light’ with ‘tentacles going right down to the ground’.

But MoD insiders claimed the craft that wrecked the turbine could have been a secret unmanned stealth bomber on test flights.

The personnel reportedly said that a black delta-wing craft called Taranis was making test runs on the coastal bombing ranges at Donna Nook and North Coates in Lincolnshire, near to the site of the damaged turbine.
