Ogopogo

“OgoPogo”

British Columbia, Canada’s Lake Okanagan is said to be the habitat of the legendary lake monster known as “Ogopogo”. This creature is considered by many to be the “nessie’ of the north. There have been Ogopogo sightings dating back as early as 1850. The sightings and reports on this mysterious creature have continued on through out the years.

Through the years there have been many reports, sightings, and descriptions of the creature inhabiting the waters of Lake Okanagan. The first clear sighting was in 1926 at Okanagan Mission Beach where a large group of onlookers reported to have seen the creature. Then in 1968 Art Folden captured one of the most well known pieces of evidence used to prove the existence of the creature , a film “The Folden Film’ showing a dark object propelling itself through the waters of the lake. Once enhanced the film showed what looks to be a solid reptilian object. The sightings of the creature have continued through out the years and a second filming was again captured in 1989 but with less clarity than the previous folden film.

The creature has mostly been described by eye witness’s as having ” many humps” and a snake or serpent like body. It has been suggested by some scientist that Ogopogo could be a primitive serpentine whale such as a Basilosaurus or perhaps a large lake Sturgeon known to inhabit the lake. With the majority of the physical evidence on Ogopogo being limited to only few unclear photo’s and film its hard to determine if Lake Okanagan has the food supply and characteristics to support the creature.

Is Ogopogo out there waiting to be found sliding across the waters of Lake Okanagan ? Will the “nessie” of the north be proven to exist before any of her counterparts ?
