Chessie (Chesap Bay)
Over the years in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay there have been many sightings and reports of a sea monster inhabiting the waters nicknamed “Chessie”. Sightings in this area go all the way to early in the 19th century and have continued into current times. The creature has been reported by many to be long and dark with a serpent like body ranging from 25-40 feet in length with some reports claiming the creature to have flippers as part of its body.
In 1982 Robert Frew videotaped the creature from a house on Kent Island that overlooks the bay. The creature was said to be about 200 yards from Frew’s location in clear and shallow water as it swam along later diving beneath the water and reappearing further down the bay. The Frew video definitely shows what seems to be a brownish creature of some kind moving side to side like an aquatic snake and was approximately 25-30 ft in length and 1 ft in diameter with a hump shaped back . Although the film quality is not good enough to definitively identify the creature once it was closely examined. There have also been sightings by some people of high integrity and training in observation like an ex-CIA agent , coast guard officers , and naval officers. The latest notable sighting of the creature happened in 1997 in Fort Smallwood State Park , although more current sightings are rumored to have happened.
Officials of the Smithsonian Institute have studied various photo’s of Chessie and they did conclude that there was a living animal that was pictured , but they could not identify it using the photo’s available at that time. Some have speculated that the creature could be that of a mutant eel of some kind or perhaps a prehistoric Zeuglodon , or even a form of anaconda coming over in the 18th-19th century on sailing ships.
